Artists statement

"I have always loved painting wildlife. I believe I did my first wildlife drawing at the age of 8 (you can see it, and a selection of my early work by following the link below). These days I try to capture a feeling or atmosphere in my paintings that depicts some of the character of the animal as well as creating a beautiful piece of work to look at.

I always paint animals I have seen and try to spend some time with them, in an attempt to get to know it enough to do a painting."

Art History - See my old work

Vervet Monkey : Mixed 17"x13" (framed)
£400
Seen during my trip to Dartmoor Zoo whilst I was dropping off some art work for their exhibition. The inspiration for the piece was the accusing look I was given.

Egret: Mixed 23"x22" (framed)
Sold
During a trip to Brazil I was lucky enough to see this gorgeous Egret stepping in to the light.

Kingfisher: Mixed 20"x18" (framed)
£380
These have always been my favourite birds but have never been brave enough to try and capture them in my art since I sketched one at the age of 8. Click here to see this first sketch.
Masai Baboon : Mixed 23.75 "x24" (framed)
£450
A much easier experience than the Cheetah below the finished baboon probably marks the end of my Kenya paintings, at least for the time being. A piece I think I'm genuenly pleased with. I've tried to capture some of the pathos we so often feel when observing our close cousins in the animal world.
Masai Cheetah : Mixed 39.5 "x16.5" (framed)
£800
After a large number of hours working (over 100 in all), the Cheetah has finally been finished. Not the simplest
of processes as it took a great deal of experimenting until I was happy with this one. The grass and tonal elements were particularly tricky but I'm pleased with the final product.
European Eagle Owl : Mixed 4.25 "x15.75" (unframed)
£190
The lastest piece, a small painting of the very large European Eagle Owl, has just been completed. Carrying on with the same style first seen with the Masai Lion and Lioness, this piece was inspired by an Eagle Owl I spent a lot of time with quite a few years ago at the International Centre for Birds of Prey in Newent.
Orang Utan : Pencil 13 "x7" (framed)
Sold
The Orang Utan Husbandry organisation recently held an event at Saint Louis Zoo. They also held a charity auction and I was priveledged enough to be asked to donate some artwork to the auction. I donated 2 pieces, the one shown here was done specially for the event and raised $250 for the Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project.
.
Masai Lioness: Mixed media 34.5"x50.5" (framed)
£450
The second piece inspired by my trip to the Masai Mara
. This lioness was in the process of dragging a Zebra carcass to some cubs and had to take regular rests in the process.
Masai Lion: Mixed Media 34.5"x50.5" (framed)
£450
Dawn on the Masai Mara, and we were priveledged enough to see this male rise from the grass and give a huge yawn to welcome the day. Adsolutely stunning
.
Sparrow Towers: Oil29.5"x38" (framed)
£500
We have a privet hedge in our back garden that quite often is home to a large number of sparrows who peer out from it in to the garden and thus was an idea for a painting born. A painting that took a long, long time to complete, but it got there in the end.
Bald Eagle: Oil 16.5 "x18.5" (framed)
£275
Done a long time ago as an experiment to see what it would be like to paint straight on to unprimed canvas, and recently updated this piece attempts to capture a little of the nobility of the Bald Eagle.
Great Grey Owl: Oil 30 "x14" (framed)
£275
A follow up to the Bald Eagle experiment, this piece took the idea a lot further and lead to many pieces in a similar style.
Woodpecker: Mixed 11"x5.5" (unframed)
£150
A predominantly pencil work with a dash of watercolour. We've been lucky enough to have this juvenile Greater-spotted Woodpecker with us regularly since it fledged. As you can see, it is starting to acquire its adult plumage.
Nuthatch: Oil 7.5 "x3.5" (unframed)
£190
After more changes than a Chameleon crossing a patchwork quilt, the Nuthatch is finally finished. It feels good to get there and I'm more than pleased with the results. I started with a much larger piece but when it was nearing completion I realised the rest was a waste, so cut it right down.
Nic Baker TamarinsNic Baker Tamarins

Golden Lion Tamarins: Oil 32"x33" (framed)
£250
I fell in love with these animals when I first saw them at Marwell Zoological Park, a number of years ago, and have wanted to paint them ever since.

Nic Baker Mute Swam

Mute Swan: Oil 32"x20.5" (framed)
Sold

Swans are one of the most beautiful birds and have a kind of mysticism to them, along with just a hint of an edge.

Nic Baker Swallowtailed moth
Swallowtailed Moth: Oil 23"x20" (framed)
Sold

Sometimes, it can take a while to decide what to do next. As I was pondering this one evening, whilst cleaning my teeth, this chap flew in through the window. Problem solved.
Nic Baker Hawk OwlNic Baker Hawk Owl
Northern Hawk Owl: Mixed 18x31.5 (framed)
Sold
Whilst studying at the National Bird of Prey Centre in Newent, these guys were always the most awake and used to stare down at me whilst I was sketching them as if they knew my soul and didn't really like what they saw.
Nic Baker Swan in ink
Mute Swan: Ink 12.5"x11" (framed)
£90

An early example of my love of swans. This one showing the more traditional image of graceful movement, through graceful water.
Nic Baker Kestrel in ink
Kestrel: Ink 10.5"x11" (framed)
£90
Nic Baker crowned lemur
Crowned Lemur: Ink 10.5"x15.5" (framed)
Sold
During a trip to Madagascar, I was lucky enough to see these in the wild, although not for long enough to get the camera out let alone the sketch pad. So, I had to wait until I went to the Zoo in the capital Antananarivo to get the chance to draw one.
Pileated Gibbon: Pen and Ink 8.5"x9" (framed)
Sold
Another old piece that has been updated to bring it up to the required standard. I originally saw this Gibbon at Blackpool Zoo back in 1995.
Spotted Orchid: Water colour 9"x11" (framed)
£250
The original flower was found in a field in Lancashire and the painting was completed in 1994, this piece belongs to a previous era of my work.
Atlantic Oak Forest : Water colour 16.5"x23.5" (framed)
£700
Undoubtedly the most time I have ever invested in a painting this was a winning competition entry in 1996. It depicts a vast number of different flora and fauna that is found in the oak forests on the west coast of Scotland.
